Accelerate Action: Empowering Women in Business and Leadership

March 5, 2025

As the global community comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2025, under the theme ‘Accelerate Action,’ the Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) proudly stands in support of this call. As the voice of the private sector in Fiji, FCEF acknowledges the invaluable contributions of women in business, leadership, and entrepreneurship. We recognize that to truly accelerate progress, we must strengthen strategies, enhance resources, and support initiatives that drive meaningful change for women in the workforce and beyond.

The Role of Women in Business and the Economy
Women play a crucial role in Fiji’s economic development, leading businesses, driving innovation, and creating employment opportunities. Across various industries, women entrepreneurs and professionals contribute to the nation’s prosperity, yet many continue to face barriers such as limited access to funding, leadership opportunities, and training programs. FCEF is committed to fostering an inclusive business environment where women can thrive, contribute, and lead.

Through platforms such as the Women Entrepreneurs Business Council (WEBC), we actively support and advocate for female entrepreneurs, providing them with resources, networking opportunities, and mentorship to enhance their success. WEBC has been instrumental in empowering women-led businesses, facilitating capacity-building programs, and advocating for policies that promote gender equality in the workplace.

Supporting Women’s Advancement in the Private Sector
As the national voice of employers, FCEF encourages businesses to take proactive steps in promoting gender equality. We urge companies to adopt policies that empower women, provide equal opportunities, and foster leadership development.

Some key actions we can take together include:

  • Leadership Development: Encouraging more women to take on leadership roles through training, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
  • Equal Pay & Opportunities: Ensuring pay equity and eliminating gender biases in recruitment, promotions, and career advancement.
  • Capacity Building: Offering skills training, digital literacy programs, and professional development workshops tailored to women in business.

By accelerating action in these areas, we can create a more balanced and equitable business environment, where women are not only participating but also leading and innovating.

Recognizing the Women Who Inspire Change
FCEF takes this opportunity to acknowledge the remarkable women within our network who are driving change in Fiji’s business landscape. From small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to large corporations, women are making significant contributions in diverse sectors such as tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, and technology.

The Women Entrepreneurs Business Council (WEBC) continues to be a catalyst for women-led businesses, supporting their growth and amplifying their voices. Through its initiatives, WEBC has empowered countless women to start, sustain, and expand their businesses, fostering economic independence and community development.

Within the FCEF, we’re proud to have women leaders shaping our direction. Currently, women comprise approximately 31% of our board, with 4 out of 13 members being female. This representation, along with the dedication of women in our member organizations and across the private sector, drives our commitment to greater gender inclusivity.

A Collective Responsibility
The call to ‘Accelerate Action’ is a shared responsibility. It requires collaboration between businesses, government, and civil society to build a more inclusive and equitable future for women in Fiji. As we celebrate IWD 2025, FCEF encourages all employers, industry leaders, and policymakers to actively support initiatives that empower women in business and leadership.

To achieve true progress, we must move beyond discussions and take decisive actions that create opportunities, eliminate barriers, and ensure women have the resources they need to succeed. Together, we can accelerate change and build a future where every woman in Fiji has the opportunity to reach her full potential.

This International Women’s Day, let us commit to doing more, pushing further, and accelerating action to uplift and support women in all areas of the private sector.

FCEF remains dedicated to fostering an environment where women can lead, innovate, and shape the future of Fiji’s business sector.
