Empowering Sustainable Futures: Women Entrepreneurs Business Council Green Policy

March 12, 2025

In an era where environmental challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and pollution are escalating, the role of businesses in fostering sustainability has become increasingly crucial. The Women Entrepreneurs Business Council (WEBC) – council under the umbrella of FCEF stands at the forefront of this, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to integrating green practices within the business community. Through the implementation of its Green Policy and the introduction of the Green Star Awards, WEBC not only acknowledges the pressing environmental issues but also actively promotes sustainable business practices among women entrepreneurs.

WEBC’s Commitment to Sustainability

WEBC actively advocates for women-led businesses, providing consistent support to Fiji’s informal and formal women entrepreneurs and business sectors.

Understanding the urgency of addressing environmental issues, WEBC has strategically incorporated sustainability into its core objectives, ensuring that its initiatives align with global efforts to combat climate change and promote ecological balance.

Launch of the Green Policy at WIN 2024

Demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship, WEBC launched its Green Policy during the Women Invigorating the Nation (WIN) Convention in 2024. This policy, formulated internally by WEBC members, requires members to incorporate green practices into their businesses and be assessed and ranked accordingly with green stars.

The launch marked a significant milestone in WEBC’s journey towards fostering sustainable business practices among women entrepreneurs.

Introduction of the Green Star Awards

Building upon the foundation laid by the Green Policy, WEBC is set to introduce the Green Star Awards at this year’s WIN Convention. This initiative aims to recognize and celebrate women entrepreneurs who have successfully integrated sustainability into their business operations. Members participating in the awards will be assessed across three key categories:

  1. Recycling: This category acknowledges businesses that implement effective strategies to reduce, reuse, and recycle within their operations. Applicants demonstrating significant waste prevention or substantial recycling efforts will receive higher scores. Additional recognition will be given to those adopting circular economy principles, where waste from one process is transformed into valuable products in another.
  2. Energy: This category honors businesses that actively conserve energy, generate renewable energy, or implement measures to mitigate their climate impact. Higher scores will be awarded to applicants providing quantifiable evidence of energy savings or renewable energy production relative to their total energy consumption. Additional points will be given to businesses adopting energy-efficient practices throughout their operations and supply chains.
  3. Sustainable Future: This category recognizes businesses contributing to a better future by supporting subsequent generations and enhancing biodiversity and nature. Applicants with initiatives that include educational components, research and product development, advocacy, or corporate social responsibility programs will receive higher scores.

The Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) has expressed pride in the initiatives undertaken by WEBC and fully supports the forthcoming WIN Convention. FCEF acknowledges the importance of integrating sustainability into business practices and commends WEBC’s efforts in leading this transformative journey.

WEBC’s strategic integration of the Green Policy and the introduction of the Green Star Awards signify a monumental step toward embedding sustainability into the fabric of women-led businesses in Fiji. By recognizing and rewarding efforts in recycling, energy conservation, and building a sustainable future, WEBC not only addresses pressing environmental challenges but also empowers women entrepreneurs to lead the charge in creating a more sustainable and inclusive economy. As the WIN Convention approaches, it stands as a beacon of progress, inspiring businesses and individuals alike to champion sustainability and blaze new trails for a greener future.

The WIN Convention 2025, scheduled for March 28-29 at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, is more than just an event; it represents a movement toward a future where inclusivity and innovation are paramount. Under the theme “Championing Inclusivity and Blazing New Trails for the Future,” the convention aims to provide a transformative experience through powerful discussions, real-life experiences, and actionable insights. A highlight of this year’s convention will be the Green Star Awards ceremony, underscoring WEBC’s commitment to fostering responsible business practices and ensuring that women play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future.

With only 16 days remaining until the convention, we urge members and all interested women to register and secure their seats before the event is fully booked.
